The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order to help keep power flowing in 17 states as a lingering heat wave strains the grid.
The department said the order includes Minnesota and Iowa. It allows specialized equipment to be sent out to help maintain operations during what experts call a heat dome.
“This heat dome is in fact the most extreme that we’ve experienced to date,” said Dr. Sanya Carley at the University of Pennslyvania.
The order went into effect earlier this month and expires Monday. One of the goals is to help people keep air conditioning running during the extended stretch of heat.
